In the midst of heightened volatility in the global energy market triggered by the ongoing West Asia crisis, Russia has offered to scale up supplies of crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to India , signaling an intensified phase in bilateral cooperation.

The energy discussions took center stage during meetings between Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov and top Indian officials including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval , External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar , and F inance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman . Manturov also called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi , reinforcing the significance Russia places on its partnership with India.

A Russian statement highlighted that Moscow has the capacity to “ steadily increase supplies of oil and LNG to the Indian market ,” a development that comes as global energy prices surge following disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz , a crucial maritime corridor handling about 20% of global oil and LNG shipments . West Asia has traditionally been a key source for India’s energy needs, making Russia’s offer timely and strategic.

Beyond energy, the talks covered broader trade and economic cooperation under the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) . Manturov and Jaishankar discussed measures to enhance bilateral trade, industrial cooperation, technology, innovation, fertilizers, connectivity, and critical minerals , while reviewing the outcomes of the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit held in December 2025.

Russia has already increased fertilizer supplies to India by 40% by the end of 2025 and reaffirmed its commitment to continue meeting India’s requirements. Both sides also explored collaboration in the civil nuclear energy sector , with Russia emphasizing “ significant prospects for deepening engagement with India .”

The engagement reflects a strategic alignment between India and Russia, extending beyond energy to encompass trade, technology, and regional cooperation, even as tensions in West Asia continue to ripple across global markets.
