Russia is weighing halting peace talks unless Ukraine agrees to cede territory
Russia is considering suspending peace negotiations unless Ukraine agrees to territorial concessions , casting fresh doubt over diplomatic efforts to end the nearly four-year war , as intensified fighting, rising regional tensions , and widening international repercussions marked another volatile day.
Officials cited in international reports said Moscow has grown increasingly sceptical about negotiations and believes the next peace talks, expected in early March 2026 in Abu Dhabi, could prove decisive . Russia is pressing for formal recognition of its territorial gains, while Ukraine has firmly rejected any loss of sovereign land, warning that concessions would only embolden further aggression. Since the start of the conflict in 2022, there have been around 12–15 formal negotiation rounds , including UN-, Turkey-, and Western-mediated talks. In 2026 alone, three rounds have taken place, including two in Geneva this month, both described as difficult and inconclusive.
The warning came as Russia launched fresh missile and drone strikes across southern and eastern Ukraine, including attacks on port infrastructure near Odessa that triggered fires and disrupted logistics. Ukraine said it struck a fuel depot in Russian-occupied Luhansk, causing a major blaze, while Moscow claimed to have captured another village in the east. A temporary local ceasefire was arranged near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to allow urgent repairs to damaged power lines, easing immediate safety concerns.
Tensions also spread beyond Ukraine after Sweden confirmed it intercepted and disrupted a suspected Russian drone near Malmö during NATO exercises, as the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle was docked in the port. Swedish leaders described the drone as probably Russian, while France said the incident posed no threat. The Kremlin dismissed the allegations as absurd.
The war’s global reach was highlighted as Ghana said at least 55 of its citizens have died fighting for Russia, with hundreds more reportedly lured into the conflict through deceptive recruitment networks . Ukraine says nearly 1,800 Africans from 36 countries have been recruited. Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa have reported similar cases, underscoring the conflict’s widening human toll. With diplomacy faltering and fighting intensifying, questions remain over how Trump had previously waved on these negotiations, but with deadlines passed and new timelines introduced, he is currently preoccupied with another conflict in the Middle East. Let’s see how he reacts.
