As the guns continued to roar across eastern Ukraine, a peculiar diplomatic theatre unfolded. Russia unilaterally declared a two-day ceasefire for May 8 and 9 , tying the pause to the 81st anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, what Moscow solemnly calls the Great Patriotic War . Russia's Defence Ministry announced the truce and said it expected Ukraine to follow suit.

But Kyiv was in no mood to take cues from Moscow. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, writing on Telegram after attending a European Political Community summit in Armenia, announced Ukraine's own ceasefire beginning at midnight on May 5 , saying Russia had failed to respond to Kyiv's longstanding calls for a lasting peace. "Human life is incomparably more valuable than the celebration of any anniversary," he declared. Speaking earlier, Zelenskyy dismissed Russia's proposed truce as "not serious," a pointed rebuke that underscored how little trust remains between the two sides.

Russia's announcement carried an ominous undertone. The Defence Ministry warned that if Ukraine attempted to disrupt Victory Day celebrations, Russian forces would launch a "massive retaliatory missile strike" on the centre of Kyiv , urging civilians and foreign diplomats to leave the city promptly.

The diplomatic shadow-boxing came against a backdrop of fresh bloodshed . A midmorning Russian missile strike on the town of Merefa in the Kharkiv region killed seven people and wounded more than 30 , including a 2-year-old boy. At least 10 homes, an administrative building, four shops, and a car repair facility were damaged. Local officials were unequivocal: the strike targeted purely civilian infrastructure, far from any front line.

This ceasefire saga follows a now-familiar pattern, most recently around Orthodox Easter, where announced truces had little to no real impact on the ground. The coming hours will reveal whether these rival pauses amount to anything more than performative diplomacy dressed in the language of peace .
