Russia Declares Victory Day Truce in Ukraine, Kyiv Moves Ceasefire Two Days Earlier

As the guns continued to roar across eastern Ukraine, a peculiar diplomatic theatre unfolded. Russia unilaterally declared a two-day ceasefire for May 8 and 9 , tying the pause to the 81st anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, what Moscow solemnly calls the Great Patriotic War . A midmorning Russian missile strike on the town of Merefa in the Kharkiv region killed seven people and wounded more than 30 , including a 2-year-old boy. At least 10 homes, an administrative building, four shops, and a car repair facility were damaged. Local officials were unequivocal: the strike targeted purely civilian infrastructure, far from any front line.
