Rubio and Lieu Clash in Fiery Congressional Exchange Over Trump’s Fitness for Office
A heated House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing turned into a sharp political confrontation as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Democratic Representative Ted Lieu sparred over President Donald Trump’s fitness for office , with video evidence, pointed accusations, and direct exchanges defining the session.
The confrontation escalated after Lieu challenged Rubio’s repeated claims that Trump remains fully alert during official duties. Lieu presented video footage from Cabinet meetings and a Memorial Day ceremony , arguing that it showed the president appearing to close his eyes for extended periods during key discussions.
“ You are literally talking about issues of war and peace, and Donald Trump is sleeping right next to you, ” Lieu said, pressing Rubio on whether he was being truthful in his earlier testimony.
Lieu further argued that such moments raised broader concerns about presidential capacity, suggesting that Trump’s behaviour during televised meetings reflected possible lapses in alertness during critical national security discussions .
Rubio strongly rejected the allegation, insisting he had never witnessed Trump falling asleep in any official setting. He described the claims as politically motivated and dismissed them outright.
“ That’s false. I’ve never seen him fall asleep, ” Rubio said, adding that Trump is highly active and maintains an intense schedule.
Rubio further defended the president’s stamina, stating, “ The guy doesn’t sleep. He calls me at 2 a.m., he calls me at 5 a.m. ” He argued that Trump’s demanding routine demonstrates sustained energy rather than fatigue.
At one point, Rubio criticised the hearing’s focus, calling the discussion “ ridiculous ” and arguing that Congress should be addressing foreign policy issues instead of what he described as distractions.
Lieu, however, pushed back forcefully, accusing Rubio of misleading Congress and ignoring what he called visible evidence presented on screen . He maintained that the footage contradicted Rubio’s statements and warranted greater scrutiny of the president’s health.
The Democrat also pointed to broader concerns raised by critics about Trump’s public appearances and medical transparency, arguing that the administration has not been forthcoming about the president’s overall condition.
The exchange quickly widened into a broader partisan clash, with Democrats questioning Trump’s physical and cognitive stamina , while Republicans defended the president’s ability to perform his duties and accused critics of political bias.
Outside the hearing, Lieu continued his criticism, previously stating in public remarks that Trump’s behaviour at official events shows he is “not fit to be president,” adding fuel to ongoing political tensions over executive health and transparency.
The White House has consistently rejected claims of cognitive decline, maintaining that Trump remains in good health and fully capable of performing presidential duties. Supporters argue that selective video clips are being misinterpreted for political effect.
The hearing ended without resolution, but the Rubio–Lieu exchange underscored how questions about presidential alertness, media scrutiny, and political messaging have become a recurring flashpoint in Washington’s deeply divided environment.
