RSS’s 100-year journey in focus: “Shatak” teaser out, controversy follows

The first glimpse of “Shatak” , directed by Aashish Mall and produced by Vir Kapur , has created a buzz ahead of its February 19 release . The film delves into the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) journey since its founding by Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar on September 27, 1925, tracing its ideology, social contributions, and historical significance during its centenary celebrations.

The 75-second teaser offers a cinematic journey through intense historical moments, accompanied by subtitles like: “This is the story of a thought… which was tried to be erased many times.” Industry veteran Taran Adarsh praised it as a “chronicle of RSS contributions,” while actor Kabir Sadanand highlighted the film’s “nation first” perspective.

Supporters describe “Shatak” as a myth-busting portrayal of the organisation’s legacy, but critics argue that it glorifies a polarizing group, igniting debates on its narrative. Some question whether the film’s highly polished, almost engineered storytelling prioritises image over nuance, saying history is shaped by real action, not carefully constructed narratives. Others also point to the broader industry contrast, noting that while Shatak appears to have secured a smooth theatrical release, a superstar like Vijay has had to navigate legal hurdles to bring his final film Jana Nayagan to theatres, prompting conversations about fairness and priorities in the release landscape.
