RSS focuses on social unity, not political power: Mohan Bhagwat
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday stressed that the organisation is not driven by political ambitions, but is committed to organising the Hindu society and fostering individual character-building. Addressing around 950 national and international sportspersons at Madhav Kunj in Shatabdi Nagar, he highlighted the importance of social unity and collective responsibility.
Speaking for nearly 50 minutes, Bhagwat reflected on the RSS' nearly 100-year journey and urged youth to actively participate in nation-building. A participant quoted him: “RSS is not driven by any desire for political power. Its sole objective is the organisation of the entire Hindu society and character-building of individuals.”
Explaining the idea of India, he said the nation draws inspiration from Lord Ram, Lord Krishna, Lord Buddha, Lord Mahavira, Swami Vivekananda, Swami Dayanand, and Mahatma Gandhi , beyond geographical boundaries. He noted that the term “Hindu” signifies unity in diversity, and cultural harmony forms society’s foundation.
Bhagwat outlined four pillars of society: value inculcation, Sanatan culture, spirit of dharma, and embodiment of truth , and stressed the RSS works to organise society through individual development. Volunteers, he said, place national interest above all. Referring to sports as a “powerful medium to bring people together” , he urged athletes to contribute to nation-building.
Recalling Meerut’s role in the 1857 First War of Independence , he said it inspired Keshav Baliram Hedgewar to establish the RSS. He also shared five guiding principles for those wishing to engage with the organisation: understanding it from within, connecting with affiliates, supporting programmes, maintaining dialogue, and working selflessly for the nation.
Arjuna Award-winning wrestler Alka Tomar praised the event as “grand,” while athletes like Surya Pratap Mishra and kabaddi coach Pintu Malik appreciated the support extended to para athletes and the motivational interaction.
As part of the RSS centenary celebrations, Bhagwat’s visit to Uttar Pradesh included earlier programmes in Lucknow and Gorakhpur , where he met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and state deputies. In Meerut, he is scheduled to meet members of the intelligentsia, including representatives from education, industry, medicine, literature, art, and trade. Entry is restricted to invitees holding passes from the RSS headquarters.
