RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s New York Event At Madison Square Garden Draws Criticism

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat is set to address more than 5,000 Indian-Americans at Madison Square Garden in New York on August 29, as the organisation takes its centenary-year outreach overseas amid growing debate over its ideology and influence.

Bhagwat will speak at the Universal Oneness Celebrations, organised by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD). The event will coincide with Raksha Bandhan and feature cultural programmes, faith-based speakers and members of Indian-American community organisations. Organisers say the gathering will promote unity, civic responsibility and global harmony.

But Bhagwat’s visit is coming at a time when his planned overseas tour has already triggered strong criticism in Canada. Two Canadian New Democratic Party MPs, Heather McPherson and Jenny Kwan, have urged the government to prevent Bhagwat from entering Canada and have renewed calls for the RSS to be banned. They cited concerns over alleged hate speech, intimidation of minorities and links to extremist organisations. More than 40 Canadian civil society and faith-based organisations have also called on the government to stop the visit.

The criticism, however, has faced a sharp counter-response from sections of the Indo-Canadian community. A campaign opposing the MPs’ demand said branding the RSS as a “fascist” organisation risks creating division and prejudice against Hindus. The group has sought evidence for the allegations and argued that the controversy should not be used to cast suspicion on the wider Hindu community.

The developments add another layer to Bhagwat’s New York appearance. The RSS has confirmed that he will visit the US, Canada and the UK from August 25, at the invitation of overseas associations and organisations linked to the Indian diaspora. The tour is being held during the RSS centenary year and is expected to include meetings with community members and local organisations.

Bhagwat is also stepping up his youth outreach in India before the foreign tour. He is scheduled to interact with students and youngsters in Nagpur on August 15 on the contribution of youth to India’s future. He recently said Gen Z and Gen Alpha are more willing to question older generations and stressed that protests in a democracy should aim at correcting the system.

The New York programme is therefore more than a community celebration. For the RSS, it is a major opportunity to strengthen its global diaspora outreach. For critics, Bhagwat’s growing international engagement raises questions about the organisation’s ideology and its influence beyond India.

Bhagwat last visited the US in 2018 for the World Hindu Congress in Chicago. RSS general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale travelled to the US, UK and Germany earlier this year as part of the organisation’s centenary outreach.
