Rs 9,000 cr investment for T’gana’s pharma sector

Global pharma giant Eli Lilly and Company is set to make a significant investment of around ₹9,000 crore in Telangana. The company has signed an agreement with the state government to expand its operations, which is expected to create thousands of jobs.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Monday between the Eli Lilly delegation and Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy at the Integrated Command and Control Center. The meeting was attended by Eli Lilly President Patrick Johnson, India President Winelo Tucker, other company representatives, and Telangana IT and Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu.

Expanding manufacturing operations Eli Lilly announced that it will use Hyderabad as a hub to expand its manufacturing activities. The company said that with the support of the Telangana government, it plans to strengthen its business in India. Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy welcomed the move, praising Eli Lilly for its confidence in the state and assuring all support for industries investing in Telangana.

Hyderabad - India’s pharma hub The Chief Minister highlighted that Hyderabad is already recognized as a pharma hub in India and is now attracting global attention. Since Indira Gandhi brought Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited (IDPL) to Hyderabad in 1965, the pharma industry has steadily grown here. Currently, around 40% of India’s bulk drugs are produced in Hyderabad, and COVID-19 vaccines were also manufactured in the city. The government is supporting pharma companies through initiatives like setting up an Advanced Technology Center (ATC) center in Genome Valley and providing technical assistance.

Thousands of job opportunities The investment by Eli Lilly is expected to create thousands of job opportunities in Hyderabad, including positions for chemists, analytical scientists, quality control experts, management professionals, and engineers. The 150-year-old US-based company specializes in medicines for diabetes, obesity, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and immune disorders, along with new drug innovations. Eli Lilly already has operations in Gurugram and Bengaluru and launched a Global Capability Center in Hyderabad in August this year. Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu said the expansion would further enhance employment opportunities in Telangana’s pharma sector.

The meeting also saw the participation of Industries Department Special Secretary Sanjay Kumar and Chief Minister’s Special Secretary Ajit Reddy.
