Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Friday announced that the Centre has allocated Rs 500 crore in the Union Budget for the development of Rakhigarhi , aiming to elevate the Harappan-era site to global recognition. Speaking at the second state-level Rakhigarhi Mahotsav here, Saini said the state government is actively working to position Rakhigarhi on both the national and international tourism map.

Rakhigarhi , located in Hisar district of Haryana, is one of the largest known Harappan civilisation sites and dates back nearly 7,000 years. Excavations at the site have revealed well-planned streets, advanced drainage systems, and evidence of craft production, trade, and agriculture, making it a crucial window into ancient urban life in India. The site has also provided insights into social structures, including indications of gender equality in ancient society.

Saini highlighted ongoing efforts to include Rakhigarhi in the UNESCO World Heritage List and assured that the demands raised by the Rakhigarhi and Rakhi Shahpur gram panchayats would be forwarded to relevant departments for prompt action. The chief minister also announced that both villages would receive grants of Rs 21 lakh each and inaugurated the Harappan Knowledge Centre .

He emphasised that Rakhigarhi is among the most significant sites of the Indus-Saraswati civilisation , showcasing advanced urban planning, sanitation, and water management practices of ancient India. “It is a matter of pride that such a major centre of ancient civilisation is located in Haryana,” he said.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi , Saini added, India is making strides in development while honouring its cultural heritage, with heritage and religious sites serving as symbols of the country’s rich traditions and civilisational strength.

The chief minister outlined future plans to develop Rakhigarhi into an international tourism and research hub, including the establishment of a world-class archaeological museum, a research institute, modern tourist facilities, and upgraded infrastructure, creating employment opportunities for local youth. He also noted that excavation findings indicate that women in ancient society were respected and enjoyed equal status, reflecting Haryana government’s focus on women’s empowerment through various welfare schemes.

Saini further mentioned that Haryana is home to around 100 historical and archaeological sites, including Farmana, Mitathal, Balu, and Banawali, with special projects underway for their conservation and development. Heritage and Tourism Minister Arvind Sharma added that the nearly 7,000-year-old Rakhigarhi civilisation demonstrated the path to modern urban planning to the world.
