A special Rs 200 commemorative coin was unveiled on Friday by Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat to honour the 200th anniversary of Rani Chennamma’s legendary victory at Kittur in Karnataka .

Rani Chennamma, the queen of Kittur in Karnataka, is celebrated as one of India’s earliest women freedom fighters. In 1824, she led a courageous revolt against the British East India Company after they attempted to annex her kingdom following the death of her husband, Raja Mallasarja. The conflict, known as the Kittur War , saw Rani Chennamma defy colonial forces with remarkable strategic skill, earning her a place in Indian history as a symbol of bravery, leadership, and resistance against foreign domination.

The year-long nationwide celebration of her historic triumph concluded with a grand closing ceremony at the Siri Fort Auditorium in New Delhi. Reflecting on Rani Chennamma’s enduring legacy, Shekhawat said her courage continues to inspire Indians to serve the nation with dedication. “On this inspirational occasion, we draw from Rani Chennamma's extraordinary character, the motivation to renew our commitment and service to the nation. Her valour and struggle remind us that one must never hesitate in the service of the country,” he said.

Union Culture Secretary Vivek Aggarwal highlighted that the year-long commemoration strengthened public engagement with Rani Chennamma’s life through exhibitions, cultural programs, lectures, and competitions across India. He described her defiance as laying the “ethical foundation” for India’s freedom struggle, inspiring generations of women leaders to act with resolve and empathy.

The event showcased Karnataka’s rich cultural heritage, including a soul-stirring rendition of the Nada Geete by female artists from the Delhi Karnataka Sangha. A special exhibition traced Rani Chennamma’s inspiring life, her courageous leadership, and her heroic resistance against British forces in 1824.

The Ministry of Culture organised a series of activities as part of the commemoration, including exhibitions, seminars, essay contests, and thematic performances, celebrating Rani Chennamma as one of India’s earliest freedom fighters.

The commemorative coin and year-long celebrations not only honour Rani Chennamma’s historic triumph at Kittur, Karnataka, but also serve as a reminder of her enduring legacy of courage, leadership, and patriotism, inspiring generations to uphold the spirit of resistance and service to the nation.
