After a disappointing opening round threatened to derail his campaign, Rory McIlroy delivered a sensational comeback at the PGA Championship , storming back into contention with a brilliant third round of 66 at Aronimink Golf Club .

The Northern Irish star, who began the tournament with a frustrating 74 and was buried in 105th place after the opening day, produced a fearless display packed with powerful drives, sharp iron play and clutch putting to climb rapidly up the leaderboard.

McIlroy briefly grabbed a share of the lead before a late bogey on the 17th hole slowed his charge. Still, the Masters champion finished strongly and remains firmly in the hunt heading into the final round.

One of the standout moments of the day came at the short par 4 sixth hole, where McIlroy smashed a towering drive directly onto the green from nearly 400 yards away, sending the Aronimink crowd into a frenzy before calmly converting the birdie.

He finished the round with six birdies , 10 pars and only two bogeys in a display that underlined why he remains one of golf’s biggest performers on the major stage.

“I still feel like I have a great chance,” McIlroy said after his round. “I’ve climbed out of the hole I created for myself and there’s one more day left.”

While McIlroy grabbed headlines with his dramatic revival, Indo-British golfer Aaron Rai quietly positioned himself for a potential career defining breakthrough. The England-born Rai ended the third round tied for second, just two shots behind the lead entering the final 18 holes.

Rai, a one-time PGA Tour winner and three-time DP World Tour champion , shares second place with a strong group that includes two-time major winner Jon Rahm, Canadian golfer Nick Taylor, Germany’s Matt Schmid and Swedish star Ludvig Åberg.

Several other top contenders struggled to keep pace during the moving day drama. Justin Thomas briefly shared the lead before four straight bogeys pushed him down the standings, while world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth both lost ground heading into the final day.

Improved weather conditions also allowed players to attack the course more aggressively. Veterans Justin Rose and Chris Kirk took advantage with impressive rounds of 65 to move within striking distance.

With the leaderboard tightly packed and multiple stars in contention, the final round at Aronimink is scheduled for 18 May 2026 , setting up a thrilling finish, with McIlroy chasing history and Aaron Rai eyeing the biggest victory of his career .
