Rohit's Fitness and Bumrah's Workload Keep Selectors on Edge Before Series
As India prepares to name their squads for next month's one off Test and three match ODI series against Afghanistan, the spotlight has firmly settled on Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Sharma . While one is battling the burden of workload management , the other faces questions over match fitness , making Tuesday's selection meeting a crucial one for Indian cricket.
The scheduling has added another layer of complexity. With the IPL final ending on May 31 and the Test against Afghanistan beginning on June 6 in Mullanpur , selectors are expected to tread carefully, especially with Bumrah. India view the pace spearhead as indispensable across formats, but with no major ODI event immediately ahead, resting him from the 50 over series appears to be the most sensible route.
If Bumrah is left out of the ODIs, Mohammed Siraj is likely to lead the pace attack alongside Prasidh Krishna , while emerging fast bowler Prince Yadav could earn a maiden opportunity after impressing with his pace and discipline in the IPL.
For Rohit, the challenge is different. The Indian captain missed several IPL games because of a hamstring injury and recently featured only as an impact substitute for Mumbai Indians . Selectors are expected to clear him for the ODI squad only if they are convinced he can withstand the physical demands of a full 100 over match.
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has once again underlined his class in the IPL and is almost certain to return for the ODI series. With Rohit and Kohli now focusing on limited formats, the Afghanistan series also becomes important in shaping India's future in Test cricket .
India's struggles against spin at home remain a growing concern. The batting unit was exposed during the South Africa series last year, and the team management is still searching for stability at number three following Cheteshwar Pujara's exit. After Sai Sudharsan failed to cement his place, talented left hander Devdutt Padikkal is expected to receive an extended run during the home season.
Selectors may also discuss the inclusion of Auqib Nabi , the Jammu and Kashmir pacer who claimed 60 wickets in a remarkable Ranji Trophy campaign and played a major role in his team's historic triumph.
With fitness concerns, transition questions and fresh contenders all in the mix, the Afghanistan series could prove far more significant than it appears on paper.
