Rohit Sharma’s 2027 World Cup Hopes in Focus Ahead of West Indies ODIs

Former India captain Rohit Sharma will be one of the major talking points when the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee finalises the squad for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, with the veteran opener’s future in the format once again linked to India’s preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The series begins on September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram, followed by matches in Guwahati on September 30 and New Chandigarh on October 3. With the World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia now a little over a year away, the selectors face the task of balancing experience with the need to build a settled squad.

Rohit, 39, strengthened his case with a spectacular 138 off 110 balls against England at Lord’s in July. His innings, which included 17 fours and five sixes, came during India’s chase of 388 and made him the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at the iconic venue. India, however, lost the match by 27 runs.

He finished the England ODI series with 175 runs at an average of 58.33 and a strike rate of 98.31. Overall, Rohit has scored 379 runs in nine ODI innings in 2026 at an average of 42.11, with a strike rate above 99.

The debate has intensified with the expected return of Yashasvi Jaiswal, creating another consideration at the top of the order. Other selection issues include the availability and role of players such as Rishabh Pant, while Hardik Pandya’s fitness has also been part of the wider discussion around team combination.

Rohit’s ODI captaincy was handed to Shubman Gill in October 2025, months after Rohit had led India to the Champions Trophy title. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia subsequently rejected reports that the selectors had decided to move on from the veteran batter.

Rohit himself has kept his World Cup future open. Asked recently about playing in the 2027 tournament, he said “October 2027 is far away”, indicating that his immediate focus remains on the upcoming assignments rather than making a decision so far in advance.

The West Indies series is therefore significant not only for Rohit but also for India’s wider ODI planning. Former all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has urged the team management to avoid major changes and develop a core group of players who can get enough game time before the World Cup.

With relatively limited 50-over cricket available before the 2027 tournament, Rohit’s performances in the coming series could form an important part of the selectors’ assessment as India work towards finalising their World Cup combination.
