Rohit Sharma to be Conferred Honorary Doctorate in Pune for cricket achievements

Indian cricket stalwart Rohit Sharma will be conferred with an Honorary Doctorate (D.Litt.) by Ajeenkya DY Patil University (ADYPU) during its 10th Convocation Ceremony , scheduled to be held on January 24, 2026, at the university’s Knowledge City campus in Pune.

The university announced that the former India captain will be one of the key highlights of the landmark academic event, recognising his unparalleled contribution to Indian cricket and his leadership on the global stage. Presided over by ADYPU President and Chancellor Dr Ajeenkya D Y Patil , the ceremony aims to honour values such as resilience, strategy, and excellence, qualities the university believes Rohit Sharma embodies and which resonate with the graduating class of 2026.

While fans widely celebrate the honour, the announcement has also revived a familiar debate around Honorary Doctorates for sportspersons. An honorary degree, unlike an academic doctorate, does not involve formal research or study and does not alter a recipient’s professional or academic standing. It is a symbolic recognition of impact and influence rather than a qualification that can be used within academia.

Similar discussions have surfaced in the past. Chess legend Viswanathan Anand was once considered for an honorary doctorate in mathematics for his extraordinary cognitive and analytical abilities demonstrated through chess. Though widely respected, the idea raised questions about the academic relevance of such honours, even when the achievements themselves are exceptional.

ADYPU’s convocation will also honour several other distinguished personalities from diverse fields, including social service, governance, culture, industry, and technology. Among the recipients are spiritual leader Pramod Sharma of Ujjain, Maharashtra minister Pankaja Gopinath Munde , cultural advocate Sudesh Aggarwal, industrial leader Rashesh Bhansali, and social entrepreneur Manoj Pochat.

The high-profile event will be attended by Maharashtra’s Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Dada Patil as Chief Guest, with Guyana’s High Commissioner to India Dharamkumar Seeraj as Guest of Honour. Actress Vidya Malvade will anchor the ceremony, which will conclude with a cultural performance by Uzbek musical group Havas Guruhi.

For Rohit Sharma, celebrated as the ‘Hitman’ of Indian cricket, the convocation marks a milestone beyond the boundary lines, adding another symbolic chapter to a storied sporting legacy.
