Former India captain Rohit Sharma has confirmed his participation in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s premier domestic one-day cricket tournament, after being instructed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to play domestic 50-over matches. The directive has been issued to ensure that senior players, including Virat Kohli, remain match-fit and technically in rhythm for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup.

According to officials, the BCCI has asked all senior cricketers to take part in domestic one-day tournaments to maintain competitive form following their retirements from T20 Internationals and Test cricket. BCCI officials have clarified that the decision was not intended as disciplinary action but as part of a standardized selection policy. The aim is to create uniform fitness and performance benchmarks for all players. Senior players’ participation is also expected to boost the visibility and competitiveness of domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy, which have often suffered from low viewership when top names were absent.
