Rogue Elephant Triggers Panic in Jharkhand Villages, Capture Efforts Continue

A rogue elephant that behaves aggressively and unpredictably, often attacking humans or property, has killed 22 people in West Singhbhum district since New Year’s Day. The animal has been moving erratically across villages and forest areas near Chaibasa , including Babaria village , where four members of a family were trampled.

The Jharkhand Forest Department has deployed over 100 personnel , including wildlife experts and veterinarians, using drones, tracking teams, and tranquiliser guns to subdue the elephant. Despite three sedation attempts , the animal continues to evade capture due to dense forests and its aggressive behaviour.

Authorities have issued nighttime safety alerts , urging villagers to stay on rooftops or elevated platforms. Experts say rogue elephants often appear when animals face habitat loss, scarcity of food, or separation from their herd , making them more dangerous and unpredictable.
