After a bruising T20I campaign that exposed glaring weaknesses and dented confidence, India will look to familiar heroes when they take on England in the opening match of the three-game ODI series at Edgbaston on Tuesday .

The return of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah could not have come at a more significant time. India managed just one non-loss in seven T20Is on the tour, with a rain-abandoned game being the lone exception amid defeats to Ireland and a comprehensive series loss to England. The disappointing run has reportedly prompted a performance review, making the ODI leg an opportunity to restore some pride.

For Rohit and Kohli, this series carries meaning beyond a routine bilateral assignment. The veteran duo, still among the finest 50-over batters in world cricket, are expected to shoulder the responsibility of reviving a shaken dressing room while also continuing their pursuit of one final ODI World Cup campaign. Their vast experience against English conditions and bowlers will be invaluable, especially against a pace attack featuring Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue .

India’s batting unit appears formidable on paper. Captain Shubman Gill returns to lead the side, while KL Rahul adds stability and versatility in the middle order. With Shreyas Iyer completing a strong top five, India possess enough firepower to challenge any bowling attack.

The greater concern lies with the bowling combination. Bumrah’s comeback provides a massive boost, while Arshdeep Singh will offer variety as the left-arm seamer. Young pacer Gurnoor Brar , impressive in his early international outings, faces his toughest examination yet in English conditions. All-rounder Shivam Dube is likely to serve as the fourth seamer in the absence of injured Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy .

India also face a selection dilemma in the spin department. While Washington Sundar and Axar Patel struggled during the T20I series, their all-round abilities keep them in contention. Wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav , however, remains India’s most potent wicket-taking option and could prove decisive on a surface offering even minimal assistance.

England, though short on recent ODI cricket, enter the series brimming with confidence after dominating the T20Is. The addition of Joe Root strengthens a batting lineup already featuring Jos Buttler, Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell , all capable of dismantling attacks at breathtaking speed.

As the focus shifts back to the 50-over format, India will hope that the return of their most accomplished stars can spark a much-needed turnaround and set the tone for the battles that lie ahead.
