Rivers in Andhra surge - Second danger warning issued as floods intensify

T he flood situation in Andhra Pradesh has intensified, with both the Krishna and Godavari rivers swelling to alarming levels, prompting authorities to issue heightened warnings for residents and devotees.

At the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada, the second danger warning was issued today following yesterday’s initial alert. The current inflow and outflow at the barrage stands at 6.02 lakh cusecs, and officials predict that the flood flow could rise further to 6.5 lakh cusecs in the coming hours. Authorities have urged Durgamma Sharannavarathru devotees visiting Vijayawada to exercise caution while taking ritual baths in river waters and strictly follow safety instructions.

Meanwhile, the Godavari River is also witnessing severe flooding. At Bhadrachalam, the water level has reached 42.4 feet, with inflow and outflow at Dhavaleswaram recorded at 10.88 lakh cusecs. The first warning issued yesterday remains in effect, highlighting the sustained threat across the river basin.

Prakhar Jain, Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA), stressed that residents in low-lying areas should remain alert and avoid crossing overflowing streams and canals. He urged all communities along the Krishna and Godavari basins to take precautionary measures to ensure their safety amid the escalating flood situation.
