Actor Riteish Deshmukh on Tuesday revealed the first-look poster of his much-anticipated directorial debut Raja Shivaji , an ambitious historical epic in which he also essays the role of the legendary Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj . The film is backed by Jio Studios and is slated for a pan-India theatrical release on May 1, 2026.

The striking poster shows Deshmukh clad in armour, holding a sword against a dramatic backdrop of stormy skies and fluttering saffron flags. The tagline “Our King. Our Pride. Our Legacy.” underscores the film’s intent to honour Shivaji Maharaj’s vision of Swarajya and his resistance against imperial domination in 17th-century India.

According to sources, Raja Shivaji will chronicle the rise of Shivaji Maharaj from a determined young leader to the founder of the Maratha Empire. The narrative is expected to focus on his strategic brilliance, guerrilla warfare tactics, fort conquests, and his relentless fight against Mughal authority and regional powers. Beyond battlefield heroics, the film will also explore the personal sacrifices, moral dilemmas, and leadership challenges that shaped his legacy as a just and people-centric ruler.

The film boasts a powerhouse ensemble cast, including Sanjay Dutt, Abhishek Bachchan, and Genelia Deshmukh in pivotal roles. Cinematography is handled by acclaimed filmmaker Santosh Sivan , while the music is composed by the celebrated duo Ajay-Atul , promising a grand visual and emotional canvas.

Raja Shivaji completed an extensive 100-day shooting schedule in December 2025. The makers have confirmed that the film will release in Hindi and Marathi, along with dubbed versions in four South Indian languages, positioning it as a true pan-Indian historical spectacle.

With this project, Deshmukh steps into a new phase of his career, aiming to present the life of one of India’s most revered historical figures through a large-scale cinematic lens that blends action, emotion, and legacy.
