'Rewriting History?' Social Media Erupts After Aamir Khan Denies Sonam Wangchuk Inspired 3 Idiots

Seventeen years after 3 Idiots became a Bollywood classic, Aamir Khan has reignited one of its biggest mysteries. The actor's statement that Phunsukh Wangdu was not inspired by Ladakh based innovator Sonam Wangchuk has triggered a social media firestorm, with old videos, interviews and even statements from the film's own team resurfacing to challenge his claim.

Speaking during a British Film Institute (BFI) event in London, Aamir dismissed the long standing belief, saying neither he, director Rajkumar Hirani , nor writer Abhijat Joshi knew Wangchuk while making the 2009 blockbuster. He also rejected co-star Omi Vaidya's recent claim supporting the connection, saying, "Chatur is wrong." At the same time, Aamir expressed concern for Wangchuk's ongoing hunger strike and wished for his health and safety.

The clarification immediately exploded online. One viral post read, "Aamir Khan denying that 3 Idiots was based on Sonam Wangchuk is a new low. Didn't the climax revolve around Wangchuk's school?" Another user asked, "Why name the character Phunsukh Wangdu if there was no connection?" A third sarcastically wrote, "Next they'll say Gandhi wasn't inspired by Mahatma Gandhi." Others accused the actor of "rewriting history" and "running away from accountability," while some defended him, arguing he had little to gain by denying the connection.

Fueling the debate further was a resurfaced 2008 CNN IBN Real Heroes Award video in which Wangchuk recalled meeting Aamir months before 3 Idiots went on floors. He said they discussed Ladakh, education and the Siachen region. Wangchuk also revealed that members of the film's team had visited a school associated with him in 2008, but shifted filming elsewhere after being denied permission to bring plastic waste onto the campus.

Adding another twist, older interviews from Rajkumar Hirani and producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra have also resurfaced. While Hirani had earlier suggested Rancho's personality drew from multiple real life inspirations, Chopra has credited several personal experiences, leaving the true origin of the beloved character open to interpretation. With 3 Idiots Part 2 reportedly in development and celebrities including Sonakshi Sinha and Omi Vaidya backing Wangchuk's ongoing protest, the debate has only intensified, making the iconic film trend once again across social media.
