Revanth Reddy Pushes Law to Ensure Dignity for Elderly Parents

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has proposed a law to deduct 10 to 15 percent of the salary of government employees who neglect their parents, with the amount to be directly credited to the parents’ bank accounts . He said the proposal would be discussed during the upcoming budget session and implemented through a legally mandated mechanism.

Speaking at a programme in Hyderabad, the Chief Minister recalled the recent issuance of appointment letters to Group-1 and Group-2 candidates , noting that nearly 90 percent of those selected came from economically weaker backgrounds . He said that if employees abandon or ignore their parents after marriage, the government would enforce salary deductions and ensure the money reaches the parents. He announced that a special law would be introduced for this purpose.

Revanth Reddy also elaborated on the ‘Pranam Scheme’ , under which parents who are neglected will be shifted to day-care centres and provided with all basic facilities. He assured that the government would stand as a family for such parents, stressing that parents sacrifice their lives for their children’s future by working tirelessly and putting their children’s needs above their own.

Expressing concern over parents being neglected in old age, the Chief Minister said parents have the right to live with dignity and that society has a responsibility to ensure their care and self-respect. According to the official Telangana government website , the government has allocated ₹50 crore under the Pranam Scheme to provide assistive devices for persons with disabilities, create equal opportunities, offer reservations in education and employment, and extend ₹2 lakh financial assistance to couples where both spouses are persons with disabilities.
