Rescue Teams Intensify Search for Seven Trapped in Laos Cave After Flash Floods Seal Exit
Rescuers are intensifying search operations for seven villagers trapped inside a flooded cave in central Laos after flash floods triggered by heavy monsoon rains sealed the exit last week, officials and rescue teams said.
The group entered the cave on May 19 in Xaisomboun province to search for gold deposits , but sudden rainfall caused rapid flooding that blocked their only exit route. One member of the group managed to escape before water levels rose and alerted authorities, allowing a coordinated rescue mission to begin.
According to rescue teams on the ground, the operation has now entered its seventh day, with Thai cave rescue specialists , including divers experienced in the 2018 Tham Luang operation, joining Lao personnel to support the mission. The combined teams are working through extremely narrow and submerged passages , some reportedly only around 50–60 cm wide, making movement difficult and slow.
Rescuers have managed to advance approximately 100 metres into the cave system , but believe the trapped group may be located about 30 metres beyond the current accessible point . Efforts are now focused on clearing sediment, navigating flooded tunnels, and pumping out water where possible to open new routes.
Teams are also exploring vertical air shafts and alternative openings above the cave system in hopes of identifying a secondary access point. Videos and field reports from the site describe sharp rock formations, zero visibility underwater conditions, and strong water currents inside the cave.
Despite the harsh conditions, there are cautious signs of hope. Rescuers believe the group may be alive after indications from the lone escapee suggested the presence of a higher, air-filled chamber deeper inside the cave that could provide temporary refuge.
However, no direct contact has been established, and the status of the seven trapped individuals remains unknown .
The operation is further complicated by continuous rainfall, unstable terrain, and remote mountainous access , requiring a steep hike of several kilometres to reach the cave entrance. Authorities say the site has long been considered dangerous and has been repeatedly warned against due to frequent informal gold prospecting.
