Renowned Poet Bashir Badr No More, End of an Era in Urdu Literature

Renowned Urdu poet Bashir Badr passed away in Bhopal on Thursday after a prolonged illness, family sources said. He was 91 .

He breathed his last at his residence in Bhopal , a family member said.

Born on February 15, 1935 , in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh , Badr went on to become one of the most celebrated voices in modern Urdu poetry . He taught Urdu at Aligarh Muslim University and earned widespread recognition for his lyrical mastery, particularly in the ghazal form , which brought Urdu poetry closer to the masses.

Badr’s body of work includes acclaimed poetry collections such as “Aas” , “Aamad” , and several widely read ghazal compilations that established his reputation as a poet of simplicity, depth, and emotional resonance . His couplets, often centered on love, loss, and human sensitivity , remain popular across generations.

He is survived by his wife and two children .

Family members said the funeral prayers were scheduled to be held after Maghrib at Kadim Masjid, following which Bashir Badr was to be laid to rest at Bada Bagh graveyard in Bhopal.
