Bollywood actor Satish Shah, celebrated for his impeccable comic timing and memorable performances in films like “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro” and “Main Hoon Na” , as well as the beloved sitcom “Sarabhai vs Sarabhai” , passed away on Sunday at the age of 74.
According to his long-time aide and personal assistant Ramesh Kadatala, who had been with the actor for over 30 years, Shah breathed his last at his residence in Bandra East on Sunday afternoon.
Filmmaker and close friend Ashoke Pandit confirmed the news, calling it “a huge loss for the industry.” He added, “Satish was one of the most jovial and warm-hearted people I’ve known. His laughter was infectious, both on and off screen.”
Born on June 25, 1951, Shah was a graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). He began his career with small but impactful roles in films such as “Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan” (1978) and “Gaman” (1979). Later, he starred in “Filmy Chakkar” (1995) and delivered one of his most iconic performances as Indravadan Sarabhai in “Sarabhai vs Sarabhai” (2004), where his wit and sarcasm made him an enduring favourite among fans. The sitcom, which earned cult status, briefly returned in 2017 for a second season.
Throughout his career, Shah appeared in numerous successful films including “Maalamaal” , “Hero Hiralal” , “Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa” , “Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge” , “Kal Ho Naa Ho” , “Main Hoon Na” , “Om Shanti Om” , “Fanaa” and “Akele Hum Akele Tum.”
Shah was married to designer Madhu Shah.
Tributes poured in from across the film fraternity. Director Farah Khan, who worked with him in “Main Hoon Na” , wrote, “Rest in peace dearest Satish. You were a joy to know and work with. Will miss you sending me memes and jokes every day.” Filmmaker Karan Johar also paid tribute on social media, writing, “Satish Shah, Om Shanti.”
Over his illustrious career spanning more than four decades, Satish Shah received several accolades for his contribution to Indian entertainment. He was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role in 1985 for “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro.” On television, he won the Indian Television Academy Award for Best Actor in a Comic Role in 2005 for “Sarabhai vs Sarabhai,” and went on to receive multiple honours from the Indian Telly Awards in 2006.
