Remembering Punjab Kesari Lala Lajpat Rai: freedom fighter and symbol of sacrifice

The nation observes the birth anniversary of Lala Lajpat Rai on January 28 , popularly known as Punjab Kesari , one of India’s most courageous freedom fighters whose life remains a beacon of patriotism and sacrifice . Rai played a pivotal role in India’s struggle against British colonial rule, leading protests against oppressive laws, mobilising citizens, and advocating social reforms across the country.

Rai was also a prominent member of the “Lal-Bal-Pal” trio , alongside Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Bipin Chandra Pal, which became the symbol of radical nationalist leadership in the freedom movement. In addition to his activism, he co-founded the Punjab National Bank , which became one of India’s leading financial institutions, reflecting his commitment to economic empowerment.

Known for his courage, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the nation , Rai repeatedly faced imprisonment and personal danger. He sustained serious injuries during a police lathi charge while protesting the Simon Commission and ultimately gave his life for the cause of India’s independence. His fearless resistance against colonial oppression earned him the title “Punjab Kesari” , or the Lion of Punjab.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi paid homage, saying, “To the immortal son of the motherland, Punjab Kesari Lala Lajpat Rai, heartfelt and respectful tributes on his birth anniversary. He offered everything he had to liberate Mother Bharati from the chains of slavery . His life of sacrifice will continue to remain a source of inspiration for every generation of the country.”

Rai’s life continues to inspire generations, especially the youth, encouraging them to uphold values of courage, selflessness, and national service . Observing the legacy of historical figures like Lala Lajpat Rai not only honours India’s freedom struggle but also promotes historical awareness, national pride, and unity , reminding citizens of the enduring importance of freedom and service to the country.
