Reliance-backed Vantara sets up university dedicated to animal care and conservation
In a significant step towards strengthening wildlife conservation efforts, Reliance Industries-backed conservation initiative Vantara on Friday announced the launch of Vantara University in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The proposed institution aims to emerge as a global centre for wildlife conservation, veterinary sciences, and animal care training .
The university will be led by Anant Ambani , Executive Director of Reliance Industries, and is envisioned as an integrated academic hub that combines field expertise with formal education. According to the company, Vantara University will translate the organisation’s extensive on-ground conservation experience into structured academic programmes, professional training, and globally relevant research frameworks .
The institution is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the growing need for skilled professionals in wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, biodiversity conservation, and veterinary healthcare. By offering specialised courses and hands-on training, it seeks to bridge the gap between practical conservation work and academic learning , an area often lacking in traditional education systems.
Experts believe such an initiative could significantly strengthen India’s conservation ecosystem, especially as wildlife faces mounting pressures captured by the HIPPO framework habitat loss, invasive species, human population pressures, pollution, and overgrazing . By addressing these critical threats, the university aims to play a vital role in safeguarding biodiversity. It will also foster international collaboration, promoting knowledge exchange and innovation in conservation practices.
Speaking at the launch event in Jamnagar, Anant Ambani said the university is rooted in a deeply personal commitment to animal welfare . “The future of conservation depends on how we prepare institutions and individuals to serve life with compassion, knowledge, and skill,” he said, highlighting the importance of building capacity for better animal care.
With its focus on education, research, and practical training , Vantara University is poised to become a key institution in shaping the next generation of conservationists and veterinary professionals in India and beyond.
