Regional alarm grows over renewed Thailand-Cambodia border war

Renewed fighting along the Thailand-Cambodia border showed no signs of easing on Wednesday, as hundreds of thousands of civilians remained displaced and shelter conditions grew increasingly strained. Sounds of outgoing indirect fire were heard by Associated Press reporters on the Thai side of the frontier, underscoring the intensity of the conflict.

Thai authorities confirmed that nearly 400,000 people have been evacuated from conflict-affected areas, while approximately 700 schools have been closed across four border provinces. Cambodia reported that more than 127,000 villagers were evacuated and hundreds of schools were shut amid security concerns.

Military sources said this week’s clashes have resulted in the deaths of five Thai soldiers and injuries to dozens. Cambodian authorities confirmed that seven civilians were killed and at least 20 wounded , although no updated casualty figures were released on Wednesday.

A clear diplomatic path to peace remained elusive, as Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul indicated that military operations would be sustained, while Cambodia’s Senate President Hun Sen pledged a strong retaliatory posture.

The conflict has begun to affect regional relations beyond the battlefield. Cambodia withdrew its entire delegation from the 33rd Southeast Asian Games , currently underway in Thailand, citing safety concerns. The National Olympic Committee of Cambodia issued a statement expressing regret over the withdrawal, while families of athletes were said to have raised concerns over their security.

Trump announces intention to intervene :

The latest escalation follows a skirmish on Sunday that left two Thai soldiers wounded and effectively derailed a fragile ceasefire brokered in July.

The ceasefire had been secured in Malaysia after pressure was applied by Donald Trump , who had threatened to withdraw trade concessions should both sides refuse to halt hostilities.

At a political event in Pennsylvania late Tuesday, it was stated by Trump that a phone call would be placed to halt the fighting. It was claimed that a war between Thailand and Cambodia could be stopped through that intervention.

Meanwhile, Marco Rubio urged both sides to adhere to commitments made during an October meeting in Malaysia, which had reaffirmed the July ceasefire and called for the withdrawal of heavy weapons, joint landmine clearance and coordinated de-escalation efforts.

Thailand’s foreign ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura stated that no contact had yet been made by the United States. It was added that external mediation would likely be rejected, as the threshold for tolerance had been crossed.

The truce had remained fragile from the outset, with both sides engaging in sustained propaganda campaigns and intermittent cross-border skirmishes in recent weeks.

In the latest escalation, Thailand deployed jet fighters to conduct airstrikes on what were described as military targets. Cambodia relied heavily on BM-21 multiple rocket launchers , capable of firing 40 rockets per salvo with a range of up to 40 kilometres and mounted on mobile trucks to reduce vulnerability.

According to a Thai army statement, approximately 125 salvos were launched by Cambodian forces on Tuesday, amounting to nearly 5,000 rockets , with several striking civilian areas. No civilian casualties were reported from those strikes.

Away from the front lines, the humanitarian toll has become increasingly visible.

In a packed gymnasium shelter in Thailand’s northeastern city of Surin , approximately 550 displaced people were reported to be waiting in cramped conditions after fleeing their homes following Sunday’s outbreak of heavy fighting. Authorities have provided food and basic recreational support for children.

Winter temperatures helped keep shelter conditions bearable; however, growing anxiety persisted over abandoned property, livestock and household belongings.

It was conveyed by Thidarat Homhual , a displaced farmer, that living conditions behind the front lines were considered manageable, but a strong desire for the fighting to end was expressed. It was also shared that deep concern was being felt for animals left behind, and that the emotional strain could not be fully articulated.
