Record April Rainfall Triggers Severe Flooding In Southern China, Over 200 Evacuated
Heavy flooding triggered by torrential rainfall inundated parts of Qinzhou city in China’s Guangxi region, leaving vehicles submerged and forcing the evacuation of more than 200 residents , according to state media reports on Tuesday.
Rescue operations were launched after the city was hit by an intense spell of rain, with emergency teams deploying inflatable boats to reach people trapped inside waterlogged homes. Footage released by state-run Xinhua showed rescuers wading through chest-deep floodwaters , while firefighters carried elderly residents to safety amid rapidly rising water levels.
Local authorities said Qinzhou recorded over 270 mm of rainfall within 24 hours ending Monday morning, the highest single-day rainfall ever recorded in the city during April. Officials described the deluge as highly unusual, noting that such extreme precipitation is typically associated with the onset of the summer monsoon season in mid to late May .
Meteorological experts cited by local authorities said the event reflects an abnormal weather pattern, with intense early-season rainfall increasingly affecting parts of southern China’s coastal regions.
While the floodwaters began receding by Tuesday morning, allowing schools to reopen and traffic to return to normal in most areas , officials said assessment of the overall damage is still underway. Reports indicate widespread urban flooding, property damage, and disruption to daily life , though a final estimate of total economic losses has not yet been released.
Emergency management authorities continue to monitor the region as weather systems remain unstable, warning that isolated heavy showers could persist.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing vulnerability of low-lying urban areas in southern China to sudden and extreme rainfall events.
