Public outrage against Bigg Boss has been growing across southern India, particularly in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, and it is now spreading to Telangana. Two residents of Siddipet district, Telangana, have lodged a formal complaint with the Jubilee Hills Police Station in Hyderabad against the ongoing season of Bigg Boss Telugu . The complainants, Kammari Srinivas and Bagannagari Ravinder Reddy, allege that the show promotes obscenity, vulgarity, and unethical behavior under the guise of entertainment.

The complainants filed the complaint at Jubilee Hills Police Station as the show’s production and broadcasting operations are based there, making it the appropriate jurisdiction. They expressed concern over the negative influence of Bigg Boss Telugu on youth, citing abusive language, indecent conduct, and socially unacceptable acts that mislead viewers toward aggression and disrespect. The letter argued that the show promotes personal attacks and vulgar behavior for publicity, undermining Indian family values and cultural ethics, while offering no educational or social benefit. It also questioned the repeated selection of participants with controversial backgrounds and criticized the program for glorifying quarrels and indecency rather than promoting discipline or social awareness. Srinivas and Reddy urged the police to register an FIR against the producers and broadcasters under relevant IPC and IT Act provisions and requested that the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting consider suspending or banning the ongoing season.

If the complaint proceeds, the Jubilee Hills Police may first register an FIR and begin an investigation, potentially summoning producers or contestants for explanations. The matter could then be escalated to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, which has the authority to issue advisories, ask for content modifications, or impose temporary restrictions under broadcasting regulations. Should the case reach the judiciary, courts will examine whether the show violates legal provisions, obscenity norms, or public decency standards. While a complete ban on Bigg Boss Telugu is highly unlikely, the complaint could lead to warnings, fines, or selective censorship of objectionable episodes. Beyond legal outcomes, such complaints often generate public debate and put regulatory pressure on producers to balance TRP-driven content with social responsibility.

The concerns raised by the complainants fall under several legal provisions that govern broadcasting and public morality. Citizens can seek action against Bigg Boss under the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995, and the Programme Code, which prohibit content that is offensive, obscene, or against public morality. Sections 292 and 294 of the Indian Penal Code criminalize the distribution or public exhibition of obscene material, while Sections 499 and 500 address defamation and privacy violations. Similarly, Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, cover the publication of obscene material in electronic form, especially when harmful to minors. While freedom of expression is guaranteed under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution, it is subject to reasonable restrictions in the interest of public decency, morality, and the protection of children, forming the legal framework that supports complaints like the one filed against the show.

Television shows like Bigg Boss have long been criticized for prioritizing TRP ratings over social responsibility. Content often includes aggressive arguments, vulgarity, and public humiliation, designed to maximize viewer engagement but ignoring its potential effects on children and society. Exposure to violent or aggressive themes can influence children’s behavior, increase disobedience, and distort perceptions of social norms. Studies have also shown that such programs can divert attention from academics and constructive activities, while shaping unrealistic expectations about relationships, conflict, and ethics.

Despite the controversies, Bigg Boss Telugu remains a major draw for audiences. The show has experienced fluctuating viewership across seasons. Season 3 achieved record-breaking ratings, with the finale reaching over 22 TVR, while Season 8 started strong but saw a decline by its conclusion. Season 9 launched with a 9.07 rating, marking one of the lower openings in the show’s history. This demonstrates that while the program generates public debate and legal complaints, it continues to attract millions of viewers, reflecting the tension between entertainment, social impact, and public morality.

In conclusion, the complaint filed by the Telangana residents reflects growing public concern over the influence of reality television on societal values and youth behavior. While Bigg Boss continues to draw high viewership and generate entertainment revenue, the ongoing debate underscores the need for balancing creative freedom with social responsibility, legal compliance, and ethical broadcasting standards to protect public decency and the moral fabric of society.
