RCB Coach Andy Flower Fined After Heated Exchange With Umpire During IPL Thriller
Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s dramatic last-ball victory over Mumbai Indians in Raipur came with a controversial subplot, as head coach Andy Flower was fined for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the tense encounter.
The IPL governing body on Monday confirmed that Flower was penalised 15 per cent of his applicable match fee after he was found guilty of a Level 1 offence during the high-pressure clash. The incident reportedly took place in the 17.2 over of Mumbai Indians’ innings when the former Zimbabwe captain got involved in a heated exchange with the fourth umpire near the boundary line.
According to the IPL statement, Flower violated Article 2.3 of the Code of Conduct , which deals with the “use of an audible obscenity during a match.” Match officials noted that the RCB coach spoke aggressively while expressing his frustration during the closing stages of the game.
The IPL also stated that Flower admitted to the offence and accepted the punishment handed down by match referee Amit Sharma , bringing the matter to a quick conclusion without any formal hearing.
While the disciplinary action grabbed attention after the match, the game itself turned out to be one of the most thrilling contests of the season. Chasing 167 in a must-win encounter, RCB held their nerve to secure a dramatic two-wicket victory off the final ball . The win kept Bengaluru’s playoff hopes alive , while Mumbai Indians were officially knocked out of the tournament.
The emotionally charged nature of the contest appeared to spill beyond the boundary ropes, reflecting the enormous pressure surrounding the business end of the IPL season. Flower, known for his usually composed presence in the dugout, rarely finds himself in disciplinary trouble, which made the incident even more surprising for many fans.
Despite the controversy, RCB will now shift focus quickly to their remaining fixtures as they continue their push for a playoff berth in a tightly contested season.
