RBI appoints Sonali Sen Gupta as Executive director

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed Sonali Sen Gupta as its new Executive Director (ED), with effect from October 9, 2025, the central bank announced in an official press release.

Prior to her appointment as ED, Sen Gupta served as Regional Director for Karnataka at RBI’s Bengaluru Regional Office. With a career spanning over three decades at the central bank, she has held key positions across departments including Financial Inclusion, Human Resource Management, Banking Regulation, and Supervision.

In her new role as Executive Director, Sen Gupta will oversee three crucial departments: the Consumer Education and Protection Department, the Financial Inclusion and Development Department, and the Inspection Department.

Sen Gupta holds a postgraduate degree with an MBA in Banking and Finance and is a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Banking and Finance (IIBF).

Throughout her tenure at RBI, she has represented India on several international platforms. She has served in the G20 Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) and the OECD International Network on Financial Education (INFE). Additionally, she has been a Director on the board of the National Centre for Financial Education (NCFE) and a member of multiple internal and external committees shaping RBI’s policy and regulatory framework.

Currently, Sen Gupta also serves as RBI’s Nominee Director on the Board of Indian Overseas Bank. Her appointment marks a continuation of RBI’s focus on financial inclusion, consumer protection, and regulatory oversight.
