Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid rich tributes to Rani Velu Nachiyar on her birth anniversary, remembering her as a pioneering freedom fighter and one of India’s earliest leaders to challenge British colonial expansion.

Born in 1730 , Rani Velu Nachiyar was the queen of the Sivaganga kingdom in present-day Tamil Nadu. She is widely regarded as the first Indian queen to wage a successful war against the East India Company, decades before the organised freedom movement took shape in India.

Her resistance against the British was rooted in their attempts to interfere in the administration of Sivaganga and assert control over the region’s resources and revenue. After her husband, King Muthuvaduganatha Thevar, was killed in a conflict involving Company-backed forces, Velu Nachiyar refused to submit. Instead, she regrouped, forged alliances with neighbouring rulers such as Hyder Ali of Mysore, and built a trained army that included women warriors.

In a remarkable military campaign, she defeated the East India Company forces and reclaimed the Sivaganga kingdom, restoring indigenous rule. Her strategy, courage, and ability to mobilise local support marked her out as an exceptional military leader and administrator at a time when women rulers were rare.

Historians note that beyond the battlefield, Rani Velu Nachiyar stood for self-rule , cultural pride , and just governance . Her life offers enduring lessons for younger generations: the courage to stand against injustice, the importance of strategic thinking, resilience in adversity, and an unwavering commitment to sovereignty and dignity.

Paying tribute to her legacy, Prime Minister Modi said she “rose against colonial oppression and asserted the right of Indians to govern themselves.” He added that her “commitment to good governance and cultural pride is also admirable,” and said her sacrifice and visionary leadership would continue to inspire generations as a beacon of courage and patriotism in India’s journey of progress.
