Raksha Bandhan Teaches Trust, Sensitivity and Cooperation, Says President Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday extended her heartiest greetings to citizens in India and abroad on the eve of Raksha Bandhan, describing the festival as a symbol of trust, respect, protection and mutual responsibility that extends beyond the bond between brothers and sisters.

In her message, Murmu said Raksha Bandhan has been an integral part of India’s culture and tradition since ancient times. She highlighted the significance of the sacred thread, or rakhi, which is tied around the wrist with faith and is regarded as a bond of protection.

Referring to traditional shlokas and mantras, the President noted the words “Rakshe, Ma Chala, Ma Chala”, which convey the sentiment, “May this bond of protection continue forever”. She said the festival has evolved into a popular social occasion, with sisters tying rakhis on the wrists of their brothers and siblings.

According to Murmu, the tradition represents warmth, respect and mutual responsibility, not only among brothers and sisters but also among siblings, families, friends and society at large. She said the festival serves as a reminder that every relationship is built on the pillars of trust, sensitivity and mutual cooperation.

The President also called upon citizens to use the occasion to strengthen relationships within their families and communities. She urged people to carry forward the spirit of unity and mutual care while working towards the vision of a Viksit Bharat.

“On this auspicious occasion, let us pledge to strengthen the bonds amongst our families and our communities. Let us march forward with this spirit towards a Viksit Bharat,” Murmu said.

Raksha Bandhan, celebrated annually, carries cultural and social significance across the country, with the tying of the rakhi symbolising affection, protection and enduring bonds. The President’s message emphasised the festival’s broader relevance in fostering social harmony and stronger community ties.
