Rajya Sabha Seats Go Unopposed in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Telangana
Candidates from major regional and national parties were declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from several states, highlighting how state assembly strength continues to shape representation in the Upper House of Parliament . In Tamil Nadu , six candidates from the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) , the opposition All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and their allies secured seats without contest after their nominations were found valid and no additional candidates entered the race. The elected members include Tiruchi Siva , Constandine Ravindran , Christopher Manickam , L. K. Sudhish , M. Thambidurai and Anbumani Ramadoss . Among them, Siva and Thambidurai were re-elected as their current terms are set to expire in April 2026, reflecting the political understanding between alliance partners, with the Indian National Congress and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam aligned with the DMK, while the Pattali Makkal Katchi is part of the AIADMK-led bloc.
In West Bengal , the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured four of the five Rajya Sabha seats from the state owing to its strong position in the 294-member Assembly , while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the remaining seat as the principal opposition party. The TMC nominees elected include former Union minister Babul Supriyo , former state Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar , senior Supreme Court advocate Menaka Guruswamy , and Bengali film actor Koel Mallick . The BJP’s Rahul Sinha , a former state party president, secured the fifth seat. With no additional nominations filed by the deadline, the candidates were effectively declared winners ahead of the scheduled polling.
In Telangana , the ruling Congress also secured both available Rajya Sabha seats unopposed. Senior Supreme Court advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Vem Narender Reddy were declared elected after the withdrawal deadline ended with no valid rival nominations. Narender Reddy, a close aide of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy , thanked Mallikarjun Kharge , Sonia Gandhi , and Rahul Gandhi for nominating him. He also acknowledged support from the All India Majlis‑e‑Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) . Singhvi, who previously served a one-and-a-half-year term from the state, has been renominated, while Narender Reddy has been serving as an advisor to the Chief Minister since December 2023. Both leaders had earlier worked with Revanth Reddy in the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) before joining the Congress.
Meanwhile, in Andhra Pradesh , four Rajya Sabha seats are expected to fall vacant in June 2026. With the Telugu Desam Party-led NDA alliance holding overwhelming strength in the state Assembly, political observers believe the ruling coalition is likely to secure most of the seats when elections are held. Together, these developments across states underline how the numerical strength of parties in state legislatures continues to determine Rajya Sabha outcomes, often allowing dominant parties and alliances to secure seats without facing a contest.
