Rajnath Singh visit strengthens India-Australia defence ties

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s official visit to Australia on Thursday marked a major boost to bilateral defence and strategic cooperation.

Singh held high-level meetings with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Thursday and hailed the fillip towards the bilateral relationship. Later he met with Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles. The leaders reviewed defence industry collaboration, cyber security, maritime security, and regional challenges.

During the visit, India and Australia signed key defence agreements, including staff talks between operational commands. Marles called the accord a “hugely significant step” in deepening operational engagement between the two armed forces. The agreements also strengthen the broader strategic framework of the Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) , which includes India, Australia, the United States, and Japan. By enhancing defence cooperation, interoperability, and shared maritime security efforts, the India-Australia partnership contributes to a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific , a core objective of the Quad.

Singh highlighted India’s growing defence capabilities and expressed gratitude for Australia’s support on cross-border terrorism. “Together, we will deepen cooperation for a free, open, and resilient Indo-Pacific,” he said.

The Defence Minister also participated in a ceremonial ‘Welcome to Country’ smoke ceremony at Parliament House and laid a wreath at the Australian War Memorial, honoring fallen soldiers. The visit reinforces the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, signalling stronger defence and strategic ties in the Indo-Pacific.

This comes amid growing defence cooperation between India and Australia, which has expanded steadily through high-level exchanges, joint military exercises such as AUSINDEX and Malabar , and enhanced collaboration in defence industry and maritime security. According to a recent statement by the Ministry of Defence, both nations are deepening ties across domains including defence technology, cyber security, and critical supply chains—reflecting a shared commitment to peace, stability, and a free and open Indo-Pacific.
