Rajnath Singh arrives in Sydney to strengthen defence ties

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh arrived in Sydney on Wednesday, beginning his official visit to Australia aimed at enhancing defence and strategic cooperation between the two nations. He was welcomed at Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport by India’s High Commissioner to Australia, Gopal Baglay, along with senior officials.

During this visit, India and Australia are expected to formalize key agreements, including a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on submarine search and rescue cooperation, which will be signed by India’s Vice Chief of Naval Staff and Australia’s Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Mark Hammond (TBC). Another agreement on the Terms of Reference for Joint Staff Talks will be signed by India’s Chief of Integrated Defence Staff and Australia’s Vice Admiral Justin Jones, Chief of Joint Operations (TBC). A classified arrangement on defence intelligence sharing is also anticipated.

Rajnath Singh’s agenda for the visit includes:

• High-level meetings with Australian leaders, including Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles, Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

• Reviewing regional security issues, particularly in the Indo-Pacific, where both countries share strategic concerns.

• Ceremonial events, such as a welcome at the Australian Parliament and wreath-laying at the Australian War Memorial.

• Participation in a Defence Industry Round Table in Sydney to explore collaboration opportunities.

• Visit to HMAS Kuttabul naval base, interaction with Indian Armed Forces veterans, and engagement with the Indian community in Australia.

Officials expect the visit to result in “new and meaningful initiatives” in defence cooperation, focusing on maritime security, intelligence sharing, and joint operations. The trip underscores the growing partnership under the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and reflects their shared commitment to stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
