Superstar Rajinikanth has confirmed that Padayappa 2: Neelambari is in the early planning stage, with story discussions now underway. The announcement comes ahead of his seventy-fifth birthday and coincides with the twenty-fifth anniversary of Padayappa , the 1999 blockbuster that redefined Tamil cinema. Rajinikanth shared that the team will proceed with the sequel only if the script develops to meet the expectations set by the original, a film that continues to hold immense cultural importance for audiences.

The return to the Padayappa universe arrives at a moment of celebration as the original film, starring Rajinikanth, Ramya Krishnan and Soundarya, is set to re release in theatres on December twelve to mark its twenty fifth anniversary. Directed by K. S. Ravikumar, Padayappa became the highest grossing Tamil film of its time and quickly grew into a phenomenon whose impact has endured for decades. Rajinikanth shared a new poster on X and wrote that Padayappa holds immense importance in his film life and that he is sharing cherished memories from the movie with fans, further heightening the excitement surrounding both the re release and the sequel.

Rajinikanth also reflected on the original casting process, recalling that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan had been the first choice for the role before she declined, which ultimately led to Ramya Krishnan’s unforgettable performance. For the sequel, the makers have not confirmed who will play Neelambari. There is no clarity on whether Ramya Krishnan will return or whether a new actress will interpret the character, as the story is still evolving. Rajinikanth also addressed circulating rumours by stating that he has never given Padayappa to any OTT platform and that the original film has never been sold to any streaming service.
