Rajasthan govt guarantees no illegal felling of khejri trees, protest concludes

The over 10-day-long Khejri Bachao Andolan in Bikaner came to an end on Thursday night after the Rajasthan government assured protestors that no khejri tree would be cut illegally until a special law for its protection is enacted.

The khejri tree, Rajasthan’s state tree , is a lifeline in the arid desert regions and a symbol of faith and ecological balance, especially revered by the Bishnoi community . The Bishnois, following the 15th-century teachings of Guru Jambheshwar, have a long history of sacrificing their lives to protect trees and wildlife , making tree conservation a deeply rooted part of their culture. The khejri tree, known for sustaining livestock and improving soil fertility, has been at the heart of multiple ‘Save Tree’ movements in Rajasthan over the decades , reflecting the community’s commitment to environmental preservation.

The latest indefinite sit-in began on February 2 in Bikaner after protestors alleged that a large number of khejri trees were being cut to make way for solar power projects. The movement drew attention to the wider conflict between development and ecological conservation, with activists calling for immediate legal safeguards.

The protest concluded after State Minister K. K. Vishnoi arrived with a government letter assuring that not a single khejri tree would be felled illegally until a dedicated law is enacted. Vishnoi added that the revenue department has instructed all district collectors to enforce the protection, and the government is preparing legislation in the current Assembly session , examining all legal aspects while maintaining consultations with saints and environmentalists. The Chief Minister has given full assurance on the issue.

Movement convenor Ram Gopal Bishnoi hailed the announcement as a victory of the people’s collective struggle and urged supporters to stay united. He highlighted that the government had issued a circular for khejri protection and confirmed that rules would be formally introduced during the ongoing session.

The government’s letter emphasized the cultural and ecological importance of the khejri tree , promising legal protection to ensure it remains a cornerstone of Rajasthan’s desert landscape. The movement underscores a centuries-old tradition of community-led environmental activism, reflecting how local communities continue to safeguard nature even in the face of modern development pressures.
