Rainbow Children's Hospitals Plans Major Northeast Healthcare Expansion
Rainbow Children's Hospitals is preparing to expand its presence across Assam and the Northeast, with plans to enhance access to advanced women's and children's healthcare in a region where patients often travel long distances for specialized treatment.
As part of the initiative, Rainbow Children's Hospitals Chairman Dr. Ramesh Kancharla met Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to outline the group's expansion strategy. The discussions focused on strengthening services at Pratiksha Rainbow Hospital in Guwahati, which has emerged as a key centre for maternal and pediatric care in the Northeast.
According to the hospital, the next phase of expansion will include additional pediatric super-specialty departments, advanced neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, and enhanced critical care facilities for children with life-threatening illnesses. The move is expected to benefit families across Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Sikkim, reducing the need to seek complex medical treatment in metropolitan cities such as Hyderabad.
During the meeting, Dr. Kancharla also highlighted the successful treatment of an eight-year-old boy from Guwahati, whose condition had become critical after conventional therapies failed. A specialized Pediatric ECMO Retrieval Team from Rainbow was dispatched to Assam, where doctors initiated Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) —an advanced life-support technology used in severe heart and lung failure cases.
The child was later transported to Hyderabad aboard an air ambulance under continuous medical supervision. After undergoing 36 days of ECMO-supported treatment, he made a full recovery and was discharged, a case the hospital described as one of its notable achievements in handling complex pediatric emergencies.
Dr. Kancharla said the case reflects Rainbow's capability to provide rapid emergency intervention and seamless retrieval services for critically ill children, even across long distances.
Welcoming the expansion plans, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appreciated the contribution of Pratiksha Rainbow Hospital in improving healthcare access for women and children in Assam. He assured the hospital of the state government's support in further strengthening pediatric healthcare infrastructure, according to a statement issued by the hospital.
Healthcare experts say the proposed expansion comes at a crucial time, as the Northeast continues to improve its tertiary healthcare network. The addition of more specialized pediatric and neonatal services within the region is expected to reduce treatment delays, lower the financial burden of interstate travel, and improve access to world-class care for thousands of families.
