Rain has become Hyderabad’s most relentless headline of 2025. Streets that once shimmered in summer heat now echo with the sound of overflowing drains and roaring clouds. By the first week of September, the city’s rain gauges had already smashed their yearly target, turning the monsoon into a record-breaking marathon and leaving residents wondering if the skies have forgotten how to stop.

By early September 2025, the city had already received over 1,050 mm of rainfall, about 25 to 30 percent more than the annual normal of 860 mm set by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Even before the monsoon’s official close in late September, the gauges had crossed the yearly benchmark, leaving little doubt that 2025 will go down as one of the wettest years of the decade.

A decade of benchmarks

To understand why 2025 stands out, it helps to revisit Hyderabad’s recent rainfall history.

• 2015–2018: Annual totals hovered near the normal, averaging 820–880 mm.

• 2019: A surplus year with intense August cloudbursts pushed the total close to 1,000 mm.

• 2020: Extreme downpours caused deadly flash floods; IMD logged ~1,100 mm.

• 2021–2023: The pendulum swung back to near-normal or slightly deficit totals.

• 2024: Another surplus year (~1,110 mm), driven by a vigorous monsoon.

Against this backdrop, 2025 has already overtaken most recent highs even before the post-monsoon showers of October and November months that can still add 100 mm or more.

Month-by-Month surges

IMD’s station data reveal that the excess is not the result of a single freak storm but of consistently wet months:

• June 2025: ~150 mm (≈30 % above normal) set the tone early.

• July 2025: ~190 mm, again surplus.

• August 2025: A remarkable ~260 mm—more than 25 % above the August normal of 204 mm.

• September 2025 (to 10 Sept): Already around 220 mm, nearly matching the full-month average of 148 mm with weeks still to go.

These figures mean the city crossed the annual 860 mm normal during the first week of September, something that usually happens only by late October in a wet year.

Why so wet?

Meteorologists attribute the deluge to a combination of factors:

• Persistent monsoon troughs over central India that repeatedly steered moisture-laden depressions toward Telangana.

• Warm Bay of Bengal waters that strengthened low-pressure systems and increased the frequency of heavy-rain days.

• A late withdrawal pattern that extended rainfall episodes well into September.

IMD officials note that while individual extreme days are becoming more common, the 2025 monsoon is remarkable for its steady, basin-wide excess, not just isolated cloudbursts.

Implications for the city

Hyderabad’s rapid urbanisation has amplified the impact. Even moderate daily totals now translate into water-logging and flash floods because of shrinking lakes and clogged drains. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation recorded more than 60 heavy-rain days (≥65 mm in 24 hrs) by September, double the long-term average.

A climate signal?

Climate scientists caution that one wet year cannot be blamed solely on climate change, but the pattern fits a broader trend. High-resolution studies show a rising frequency of short-duration intense rains over the Deccan Plateau. Warmer air holds more moisture, making intense bursts more likely even when seasonal totals vary.

Looking Ahead

With the post-monsoon season (October–November) still ahead, Hyderabad could easily cross 1,200 mm before year-end, a figure exceeded only a handful of times in the city’s recorded history. For residents, the numbers confirm what they already feel in their daily commute: 2025 is a year when the rains simply refuse to stop. Measured against the IMD’s long-term monthly normals and the city’s own rainfall record, 2025 is unequivocally a “heavy rain” year for Hyderabad. Consistently above-normal totals from June through September, coupled with an early breach of the annual average, make this monsoon one of the most significant of the past decade both a warning and a wake-up call for urban planners.
