Rahul Gandhi meets workers unions, raises concerns over new Labour Codes

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday met representatives of workers’ unions from across India to discuss the recently announced Labour Codes and their potential impact on workers’ rights. Speaking on X, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha said the unions are deeply concerned that the four new Labour Codes – Code on Wages (2019), Industrial Relations Code (2020), Code on Social Security (2020), and Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code (2020) – could undermine the rights of workers and weaken the role of trade unions.

According to Gandhi, the unions fear that while the government presents these Codes as reforms, in practice they may prioritise the ease of doing business over the welfare of workers. They raised concerns that the legislation could reduce protections related to wages, social security, occupational safety, and working conditions. The unions also expressed apprehension that the Codes could limit their ability to collectively negotiate and voice grievances effectively, thereby reducing the influence of workers’ organisations. Gandhi said he listened carefully to their suggestions and assured them that he would raise these concerns in Parliament and take the discussions forward.

The Government of India, on the other hand, has maintained that the Labour Codes aim to modernise outdated labour laws and simplify compliance. By consolidating 29 existing labour laws into four comprehensive Codes, the government says it intends to create a streamlined, efficient framework that balances the welfare of workers with the operational efficiency of enterprises. According to official statements, the Codes are designed to protect workers’ rights while also promoting ease of doing business and reducing bureaucratic complexity.

Experts and opposition leaders, however, emphasise that the true impact of the Codes will depend on strict enforcement and careful monitoring to ensure that workers’ rights are not diluted. The meeting with Rahul Gandhi highlighted the continuing debate on whether the Labour Codes can achieve both economic efficiency and robust protection for India’s workforce.
