Rahul Gandhi Lays Foundation for Wayanad Landslide
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday laid the foundation stone for 100 houses for victims of the 2024 Wayanad landslides , which struck 30 July 2024 , claiming over 400 lives and displacing thousands. Each house will measure 1,100 sq ft on 8 cents of land. Most rehabilitation support, including housing and compensation, is being provided by the Kerala state government , with partial assistance from the Centre.
Addressing the families, Gandhi praised their resilience. “You have lost a lot, but not your spirit, courage, or compassion,” he said. He acknowledged delays in construction due to permissions and land issues, adding that work would now proceed quickly.
The event also had a lighter moment as Gandhi shared a personal anecdote about his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra , the current MP from Wayanad. Recalling how she initially seemed upset during the journey to the ceremony, he said, “But when we reached here, she started talking to me. That is the magic of Wayanad.” Gandhi called the people of Wayanad his family and emphasized the importance of transparency and openness in politics.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra highlighted the hardships faced by families who lost farms and loved ones and lauded the unity of the community across religions. Both leaders distributed Rs 5 lakh each to 40 people who lost their shops. Senior Congress and UDF leaders were present, underscoring the party’s ongoing commitment to supporting the victims and aiding the region’s recovery.
