Rahul Gandhi Heads to Raebareli, Amethi as Congress Steps Up for UP 2027 Assembly Election Push
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi will begin a two-day visit to Raebareli and Amethi from May 19, with the Congress party using the outreach programme to sharpen its organisational strategy ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections .
According to Congress leaders, Gandhi will begin the first day of his visit by inaugurating a marriage hall at Thakurain Kheda in Bachhrawan. He will later address a public meeting in Khiron and participate in a 'mahila samvaad' programme in Lalganj aimed at strengthening outreach among women voters and local workers.
On May 20, Gandhi is scheduled to hold a 'Janata Darshan' programme at the Bhuyemau Guest House, where he is expected to interact directly with members of the public, social organisations and party workers. He will then unveil a statue of Veera Pasi in Lodhwari, pay floral tributes and address another public gathering before leaving for Amethi.
In Amethi, Gandhi will hold meetings with Congress office-bearers, grassroots workers and senior leaders at the district headquarters. Party leaders said the discussions would focus on strengthening the organisation down to the booth level, increasing the participation of youth and women workers and intensifying village-level public outreach campaigns across the region.
Political observers view the visit as part of the Congress party’s broader effort to revive and rebuild its grassroots structure in Uttar Pradesh after recent electoral setbacks. Sources said workers from Gram Sabha to district level have been invited for the interaction sessions, and Gandhi is expected to directly hear suggestions and grievances from party cadres.
The visit also carries symbolic importance for the Congress, as both Raebareli and Amethi remain politically linked with the Gandhi family. Rahul Gandhi currently represents Raebareli in the Lok Sabha after succeeding his mother Sonia Gandhi from the constituency in the 2024 general election, while Congress leader Kishori Lal Sharma defeated former Union minister Smriti Irani in Amethi in the same election.
During the visit, Gandhi will also travel to Poore Ramdeen Pandit village to meet the family members of late Congress district president Yogendra Mishra , considered a close associate of the Gandhi family. Mishra died on March 1 after a prolonged illness.
Ahead of Gandhi’s arrival, political activities have intensified across Raebareli and Amethi, with Congress workers organising mobilisation drives, putting up posters and reviewing arrangements for public meetings and reception programmes. Kishori Lal Sharma has also been holding regular meetings with local leaders and functionaries to oversee preparations.
