India and Sri Lanka on Sunday discussed the possibility of establishing a cross border oil pipeline , marking a key step towards expanding energy cooperation between the two neighbours, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said.

The proposal was taken up during talks between Vice President C P Radhakrishnan and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in Colombo. The discussions also covered broader areas of bilateral cooperation , including development projects, housing support, and issues concerning fishermen.

Misri said both sides reviewed ongoing initiatives such as the proposed energy hub in Trincomalee and other connectivity projects. The oil pipeline idea was highlighted as a strategic move to enhance regional energy security , especially at a time when global energy supplies face uncertainty due to developments in West Asia.

Sri Lankan leaders acknowledged the long standing civilisational ties between the two countries and appreciated India’s Neighbourhood First policy , which has helped strengthen bilateral engagement. India also reiterated its role as a first responder , recalling assistance provided during Sri Lanka’s economic crisis in 2022 and relief support after Cyclone Ditwah in late 2025.

A major focus of the talks was India’s USD 450 million Cyclone Ditwah recovery package . Fishermen related issues were also discussed in a humanitarian manner , with both sides emphasizing the need to balance livelihood concerns with maritime sensitivities.

During the visit, Radhakrishnan met Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa , who both stressed the importance of strengthening trust and cooperation between the two countries. Premadasa described India Sri Lanka relations as rooted in shared history and shared future .

The Vice President also interacted with Tamil political leaders and diaspora representatives, who welcomed India’s rehabilitation efforts. Progress on the Indian Housing Project , which aims to build around 50,000 homes for Tamil families, was also highlighted.

Other discussions included the digital identity initiative and the proposed Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement , aimed at deepening economic and technological ties.

Radhakrishnan also attended community events and temple visits, underlining cultural and people to people linkages that continue to shape the partnership between India and Sri Lanka.
