With eyes set firmly on the global stage, the Athletics Federation of India has unveiled a detailed and performance-driven selection policy for the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships , bringing clarity and structure to how India’s brightest young talents will earn their place.

Scheduled to be held from August 5 to 9 in Eugene, USA , the championship is one of the most prestigious platforms for emerging athletes worldwide. For India’s aspiring stars, the road to Eugene will now pass through a series of carefully chosen domestic and international competitions.

The AFI has identified three key events as the backbone of its selection process. The Indian Athletics Series 9 in Ludhiana on June 13 will focus on middle and long-distance races along with throwing events. This will be followed by the 10th leg of the Indian Athletics Series in Thiruvananthapuram on June 14, where sprinters, jumpers, and hurdlers will get their chance to shine.

Adding further weight to the process is the ongoing 24th National Junior Federation Championships in Tumkur, which will primarily serve as the qualifying ground for combined events like decathlon and heptathlon , as well as race walking disciplines.

In a move that underscores merit and competition, the AFI has stated that only one athlete per event will be granted automatic selection , based strictly on performance. A second spot, if available, will depend on the discretion of the selection committee, ensuring that consistency and peak form are both taken into account.

Importantly, performances at the 22nd Asian U20 Athletics Championships in Hong Kong (May 28–31) may also be considered, provided athletes participate in final trials and maintain their standards.

The federation has also released stringent qualification benchmarks across all disciplines for both men and women, reflecting the rising competitiveness of global junior athletics. From sprint timings to field event distances, every mark has been carefully calibrated to match international standards.

This structured pathway signals a clear intent: to send only the most prepared and competitive athletes to the world stage . As the countdown to Eugene begins, India’s young athletes now know exactly what it takes—not just to qualify, but to compete among the very best.
