Pyongyang showcases military advancements at annual defence expo 2025

Pyongyang recently unveiled its annual Defence Development‑2025 military exhibition, highlighting what North Korea described as its most advanced weaponry and defense systems. The showcase, held ahead of the 80th anniversary of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK), displayed a mix of missiles, naval vessels, and other strategic assets, signaling a sharpened military posture under leader Kim Jong Un.

South Korea has raised concerns over Pyongyang’s nuclear capabilities, claiming that North Korea has amassed a significant quantity of highly enriched, weapons-grade uranium. During the event, Kim Jong Un warned that no South Korean territory is safe from these hypersonic missiles, emphasizing that his nation can strike key targets despite advanced missile defense systems. Analysts caution that while these capabilities signal a serious threat, some aspects, particularly long-range hypersonic precision remain plausible but not fully verified. Many of the systems may also serve as strategic signaling rather than operational readiness.

Despite the ambitious display, independent assessments suggest North Korea does have functional short-range missiles, nuclear weapons, and emerging technologies, but the operational extent, quantity, and effectiveness of these systems are uncertain.
