PV Sindhu Breaks Barriers, Joins BWF Council as Voting Member
Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu has stepped into a rare administrative role while still competing, becoming a voting member of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Council and pledging to represent players’ voices worldwide.
One of the most accomplished shuttlers in history, Sindhu took up the position after being elected Chair of the BWF Athletes’ Commission in December. She completed the formal vetting process and officially joined the Council at the end of 2025. Her first appearance before the global badminton fraternity came during the Annual General Meeting in Horsens, Denmark, on April 25 , marking the start of her tenure.
“It is a true honour and privilege to represent athletes from around the world,” Sindhu said, adding that badminton had given her “so much” and she was grateful to contribute in a governance role.
Her inclusion is considered significant as it is rare for active elite athletes to hold voting positions in sports governing bodies. This is mainly due to concerns around conflict of interest , as players could be directly impacted by decisions they help take, and the need for impartial governance .
Another key reason is the demanding schedule of professional sport , which leaves limited time for administrative responsibilities. Most governing structures also traditionally rely on retired players or full-time officials to ensure continuity and broader stakeholder balance, including federations, sponsors, and organisers.
Active players are usually represented through athletes’ commissions , which provide input but often do not carry full voting power. Sindhu’s role breaks this norm, giving her a direct say in decision-making at the highest level.
In her new position, she will participate in discussions on the strategic direction and governance of world badminton , ensuring that players’ experiences and concerns are reflected in key decisions.
Welcoming her, BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul praised Sindhu as a role model , noting her “exceptional skill, grace and spirit” and her value in bringing the athlete’s perspective into global leadership.
