Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi on Thursday evening to a rare protocol-breaking gesture, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally received him at the airport a warm welcome underscoring the depth of the India–Russia relationship as the two nations prepare for a high-stakes summit today.

Modi hosted a private dinner for Putin last night, setting the tone for the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit. The discussions today are expected to centre on strengthening defence cooperation, protecting bilateral trade from external pressures, and expanding collaboration in emerging areas such as small modular nuclear reactors. Diplomatic observers note that the meeting will be closely watched by several Western capitals.

Putin’s 27-hour visit comes at a time when India–US relations are witnessing a notable strain, casting additional significance on the Russian leader’s engagements in New Delhi. Officials indicated that the two sides are expected to finalise multiple agreements today, including those related to trade and strategic cooperation.

This morning, Putin will receive a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan before proceeding to Hyderabad House for formal talks. Modi will also host a working lunch for the visiting delegation.

The Russian President is scheduled to visit Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi earlier in the day. After the summit talks, he will launch the India edition of Russia’s state-run broadcaster. In the evening, President Droupadi Murmu will host a state banquet in his honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Putin is expected to depart New Delhi around 9 pm today.
