Punjab’s model and India’s moment of reckoning in sustainable agriculture

When Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently praised the farmers of Ransih Kalan in Punjab, a village that has maintained six consecutive years without a single instance of stubble burning the acknowledgement carried significance far beyond one village or one cropping season. Punjab has long represented both India’s agricultural pride and its ecological anxieties. For a state often celebrated as the cradle of the Green Revolution yet criticised for environmental decline, Ransih Kalan’s achievement demonstrates an important reality: sustainable farming is not an abstract environmental ideal but a practical, profitable and health-protecting approach that farmers can adopt with success.

Chouhan’s remarks during his visit to Moga district come at a time when Indian agriculture is undergoing a profound transition. Punjab’s nearly 80 percent reduction in stubble-burning incidents this year signals not just a statistical improvement, but a genuine behavioural transformation. Farmers who once saw burning as the quickest and cheapest way to clear fields are now relying on machines, scientific residue management and updated cultivation methods. While the minister’s praise recognises this progress, the deeper story is about why India must urgently embrace sustainability as the foundation of its agricultural future.

For decades, agriculture in India has operated on what experts call a “borrowed-time” model—one that depends on high-yielding seed varieties, extensive use of chemical fertilisers, relentless groundwater extraction and a narrow focus on a few major crops. This model did secure food self-sufficiency, but it also created long-term vulnerabilities. Groundwater depletion in Punjab and Haryana ranks among the fastest in the world. In drought-prone regions of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, rainfall unpredictability has trapped lakhs of farmers in cycles of debt and forced migration. Soil organic carbon levels, essential for fertility and moisture retention, have fallen sharply across major agricultural belts, making farms more fragile in the face of climate stress.

Climate change has turned these structural issues into urgent threats. Heatwaves arrive earlier, monsoons shift unpredictably and unseasonal rains routinely destroy standing crops. The old agricultural model built on assumptions of stable weather and abundant water is increasingly incompatible with today’s realities. India’s food security for 1.4 billion people cannot depend on depleted aquifers, nutrient-exhausted soils and short-term practices that weaken future productivity. This is why the example of Ransih Kalan is so significant: it shows what becomes possible when farmers choose practices that restore land health rather than compromise it.

Sustainable agriculture, often misunderstood as a niche organic trend, is actually a broad set of methods aimed at maintaining productivity without degrading the environment. Farmers in Ransih Kalan embraced several transformative practices. They replaced stubble burning with machines such as Happy Seeders and Super Seeders, which mulch crop residue back into the soil, improving moisture retention, nurturing beneficial organisms and lowering fertiliser needs. Many farmers adopted Direct Seeding of Rice, which reduces water use, saves labour and avoids the soil disturbance caused by traditional puddling. Precision fertiliser application helped avoid nutrient imbalances and reduced costs. Some farmers diversified into millets, pulses and oilseeds, crops that require less water and fewer chemicals than paddy and wheat. Most importantly, the village's community cooperation ensured that no farmer’s old habits undermined the collective effort. This social solidarity transformed sustainable farming from an individual experiment into a community movement.

These practices not only curbed pollution and revived soil health but also maintained stable yields, proving that sustainability is not a step back for agriculture it is a step towards long-term economic and ecological resilience. Chouhan’s praise should therefore spark a deeper national conversation. India’s agriculture now faces converging challenges: rapidly falling groundwater tables, stagnant incomes, high input costs, unpredictable markets, extreme weather events and increasing public-health concerns caused by annual pollution spikes due to farm fires. Sustainable practices such as crop diversification, drip irrigation, precision farming and scientific residue management have shifted from being optional innovations to essential survival strategies.

Farmer innovation alone, however, is not enough. Large-scale adoption requires robust, consistent policy support. India must ensure stable subsidies for sustainable machinery, reliable procurement policies that make diversification safe, strong extension services with properly trained staff, village-level composting units for residue utilisation and assured markets for sustainably grown produce. Farmers rarely resist change; they resist the financial risk that change brings. When governments reduce that risk, sustainability spreads naturally.

Beyond economics and technology, sustainable farming is also reshaping rural mindsets. Stubble burning was often a habit created not by carelessness but by compulsion lack of time, limited resources and social familiarity. Changing such a habit requires trust in new techniques, confidence that yields will not fall and the reassurance of community support. When a village sees its efforts recognised nationally, it builds pride and a sense of partnership in protecting India’s environmental future.

India stands at a defining moment. The decisions made today will determine whether the country builds resilient food systems or confronts recurring cycles of agricultural crisis. Sustainable farming is no longer merely an environmental cause; it has become central to national security, economic stability and public health. Punjab’s farmers have shown what is possible when communities innovate and governments stand with them. Ransih Kalan is not just a model village it is a blueprint for the future India must urgently adopt.
