The Punjab Police have busted an ISI-backed terror module in a major counter-terror operation, recovering a significant cache of explosives and arms and arresting suspects linked to cross-border handlers, officials said on Thursday.

The operation was jointly carried out by State Special Operations Cells (SSOC) of Amritsar and Mohali , along with the Counter Intelligence Wing , with support from other intelligence inputs, leading to the dismantling of the module allegedly operating under instructions from foreign-based handlers linked to Pakistan’s ISI .

Officials said at least two accused have been arrested and a large quantity of arms and explosives has been recovered, including four to five hand grenades , two foreign-made pistols , ammunition, and additional terror-related material. Some reports also indicate the recovery of IED components and triggering mechanisms , suggesting preparations for a larger planned attack.

Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigation shows the accused were in contact with cross-border operatives and were being directed to carry out targeted terror activities. The module is also suspected to have links with a recent grenade attack in Chandigarh , prompting investigators to examine its wider operational network.

According to officials, the group appears to be part of a broader pattern of ISI-linked terror modules operating through local recruits and foreign handlers , with similar recent cases in Punjab involving grenade attacks and attempted strikes on police establishments.

An FIR has been registered at the State Special Operation Cell police station in Amritsar , and further investigation is underway to identify additional members, funding routes, and logistical support networks.

Security agencies are now focusing on mapping forward and backward linkages , including possible inter-state connections and coordination with other recently busted modules in Punjab, as investigations continue.
